The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade said Monday that the annual Promotion Month will focus on environment-friendly products this year.
The department is urging city firms, including some of Vietnam's biggest retailers, to sign up for a shopping program through September.
Goods will be on sale at discounts of up to 49 percent during what will be a city-wide shopping frenzy.
A promotion week themed "Consuming Green Products" is scheduled for the third week of September at the country's biggest supermarket chain, Co.op Mart. Customers will get non-plastic bags free of cost and discount coupons when they buy environment-friendly products.
The promotion will benefit companies that are making an effort to protect the environment, the department said.
Promotion Month 2010 will kick off August 31 with a trade fair in District 11, Tran Vinh Nhung, the department's deputy director said.
The five-day fair at the Phu Tho Stadium will have 400 booths showcasing domestically-made goods.
